Newborns

After leaving the womb, babies quickly forget the sensation of being in liquid, but with a few lessons, you, the parent, can learn how to help your child retain that memory and continue to feel safe and comfortable in the water. The minimum requirements for swimming lessons are that your baby’s umbilical chord has completely healed and that you have had approval from his/her pediatrician. If your baby is too young to join the tadpole groups, you can arrange a few private lessons.

A baby who is comfortable floating on his back with his ears fully submerged is better equipped to save himself should the situation arise. A baby can also be submerged from a very young age and will rarely inhale any water. These are the two main focuses. Babies will practice developmental skills in the water such as lifting the head when laying on the tummy, rolling from front to back and back to front and walking in waist-deep water. The idea of these lessons is to give the parent the skills and confidence to get in a full tub of water or a pool with their child and have their own swimming lesson together. Bath time will become the highlight of the day. This special time spent together can be very rewarding for both parent and child.

To enquire or make a booking, please contact newborn[at]swimminginstinct.com or call 297 8062. Lessons are generally 15 minutes as the babies are so young at this stage. You may book just one lesson or several. All courses must run at our St. George’s location in our brand new, purpose built baby pool. The pool will be heated, when necessary, to the optimal temperature.

Top: Mandy's son has only been in his baby tub twice. Since thirteen days old, he has been having nightly swimming lessons in the big tub filled to the brim with his Mom right in there with him. Mandy, owner of Swimming Instinct has used these experiences to design a program specifically for the youngest of swimmers.
